What is Yoni Steaming?
Yoni steaming is a practice where you sit over a hot bowl of water full of herbs, letting the steam cleanse your vagina and uterus, having a towel draped over your legs to keep the steam from coming out. A yoni steaming session could last from 20-60 minutes. This is something you can do at home, but is strongly encouraged to do it where there are professionals helping. It is commonly known to help postpartum, but has also been known to help with your monthly periods.
It has also been interchangeably called vaginal steaming. “While this practice is newer to the West, vaginal steam detoxing has been linked to an ancient Greek treatment known as “fumigation.” This method involved sitting over a sealed jar of herbs that was heated up in a hole in the ground. A reed was used to transfer smoke from the jar into the vagina.” (Cleveland Clinic. (2024, June 27). What is vaginal steaming? https://health.clevelandclinic.org/vaginal-steaming).
Most common herbs to be used in Yoni Steaming include:
- Wormwood – for its antimicrobial and antiviral properties
- Rutin – for it’s anti-inflammatory properties
- Mug Wort – for its antibiotic and balancing hormone properties
- Dandelion – for its ability to treat infections and inflammation.
